KCLS Named Library of the Year

Thursday, June 9th, 2011

The King County Library System (KCLS) has just been named Library of the Year by Gale/Library Journal. KCLS was praised for among other things:

  • Its innovative programs, such as its Library2Go vans
  • Its responsiveness to its patrons, such as its increased support for job seekers who needed help with job searches and resumes
  • Its strong public support demonstrated in 2010 by voters approval of a levy lift in the midst of the worst economic downtown since the 1930s
  • Its mastery of technology with the development of a new open-source information system, Evergreen

The Mercer Island Library has been a member of the King County Library System since 1993, when Islanders voted overwhelming (88% in favor) to become part of the larger library group.

The Friends of the Mercer Island Library congratulate the board and the staff of KCLS on this wonderful recognition.

KCLS “Book Cover Walking Tour” on Mercer Island

Tuesday, February 22nd, 2011

Mercer Island is one of eight King County communities that is participating in the King County Library Systems’ “Book Cover Walking Tour.” Above is a picture of one of the book-cover banners on the island. This one is between Corry’s CO2 Dry Cleaners and Mercer Island Florists on the 3000 block of 78th Avenue SE. There are another six banners on Mercer Island each with different books covers and over 100 different book-cover banners in such nearby communities as Bellevue, Issaquah, and Renton (http://www.kcls.org/about/board/2011/022211/AttachmentF.pdf).

The “Book Cover Walking Tour” is not only active with readers seeking out the banners, but also interactive. If you see a banner, you can call 425-507-0429 on your mobile phone and enter the extension number listed on the banner to hear about the book (“602″ in the banner in the photo). You can also download to your MP3 player an audio tour for the entire “Book Cover Walking Tour” at www.myoncell.com/mp3download?14255070429.

Have fun tracking down all seven book-cover banners on Mercer Island or those in other communities.

The “Book Cover Walking Tour” runs through the end of May 2011.  It is part of KCLS’s “Take Time to Read” program, which aims to increase reading across KCLS’s service area and is sponsored by the KCLS Foundation. For more information about the “Book Cover Walking Tour” and the “Take Time to Read” program, please call 425-369-3275 or go to www.kcls.org/taketimetoread/.
